All about the monkeypox

20-09-2023

Monkeypox is a zoonotic toxic disease caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection, mainly manifested as fever, rash and enlarged lymph nodes. The disease is mainly prevalent in Central and West Africa. Since May 2022, a large number of monkeypox cases have been reported in some countries in non-endemic areas, and the person-to-person transmission has occurred.

Monkeypox and smallpox are close relatives, and their clinical manifestations are also similar. The "efficiency" of human transmission is much lower than that of smallpox, and the symptoms are significantly less severe than those of smallpox. Unvaccinated people against smallpox are generally susceptible to monkeypox virus.

The incubation period of monkeypox ranged from 5 to 21 days. Prodromal symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, drowsiness, fatigue, back pain and myalgia can appear early on.90% of patients showed significant superficial lymph node enlargement, such as neck, axillary, groin, etc. The skin rash appeared 1 to 3 days after disease onset. First appear on the face, gradually spread to the limbs, the palms and the soles of the foot can appear rash. It may involve the oral mucosa, digestive tract, genitalia, conjunctiva and cornea. Some patients may have complications, including secondary bacterial infection of the skin lesion, severe dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhea, bronchopneumonia, encephalitis, and corneal infection.
