World Drug Day, also known as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is observed every year on June 26. It is a United Nations designated day to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking of drugs. The day aims to promote activities and initiatives to combat drug abuse and trafficking, and to support people affected by drug addiction. The theme for World Drug Day 2023 is "People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention".
Drugs can kill. Additionally, drug use can be a significant burden on healthcare systems, law enforcement, and social services, diverting resources away from other critical areas. The impact of drug use and addiction is not limited to individuals but can have a broader impact on society, including the loss of productivity, increased healthcare and criminal justice costs, and decreased economic growth. It is crucial to address drug use and addiction comprehensively, including prevention efforts, treatment options, harm reduction strategies, and addressing underlying social determinants of drug use. Only by working together can we reduce the harm caused by drug use and addiction and build healthier, safer communities.
