World Stroke Day: Focus on prevention

27-10-2023

Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular disease, is a sudden occurrence of cerebrovascular circulation disorders, mainly including two major types: ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. According to the Lancet Global Stroke Report, in 2019, there were an estimated 1.22 million stroke cases worldwide, and 101 million people were affected. It resulted in 143 million disability adjusted life years and 6.55 million deaths. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the third leading cause of death and disability worldwide.

Although stroke is gravely threatening and greatly harmful, seriously affects people's healthy life, it is still a preventable and controllable disease. The Chinese government, organizations, experts and scholars in the field of stroke medicine, medical personnel, and public welfare volunteers have been long insisting on promoting the health concept and scientific knowledge of stroke prevention to the public. The World Stroke Organization recently pointed out that 90% of stroke can be avoided, therefore, the public understand the various risk factors leading to stroke, and through physical practice and active prevention, the whole society jointly build a Great Wall of health prevention and control of stroke, that is the most fundamental strategy and policy for the rapid progress of stroke prevention and control in China.

So, how can we prevent stroke?

1. Conduct regular self-screening of stroke risk factors, including hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, smoking, drinking, overweight and obesity, unhealthy lifestyle, and other diseases that may lead to stroke.

2. Keep your blood pressure under control. Blood pressure should be measured at least once a year for people over 35, and at least once a month for people with high blood pressure, who also need medication.

3. Control your blood sugar. People with no risk factors for diabetes are recommended to start screening at age ≥40 years, and people with risk factors for stroke should have their blood sugar tested regularly.

4. Control blood lipids. Elevated blood lipids generally have no symptoms and abnormal signs, and must be detected in time by lipid examination. Adults over 20 years old should be measured at least once every 5 years for fasting lipids, men over 40 years old and postmenopausal women should be tested every year, and for high-risk groups of ischemic cardiovascular disease and ischemic stroke, blood lipids should be measured every 3-6 months.

5. Quit smoking. Smoking is harmful, all people should actively to refuse smoking and avoid the harm of passive smoking.

6. Control your weight. Overweight and obese people can lose weight through a healthy lifestyle, good diet, increasing physical activity and other measures, which are conducive to controlling blood pressure and reducing the risk of stroke.

7. Healthy diet. The daily diet should be diversified to make the intake of energy and nutrition be balanced, do not take salt over 5g daily, less oily food, control the intake of cholesterol and carbohydrates, and avoid alcohol.

8. Exercise scientifically. Healthy adults participate in aerobic exercise 3-4 times a week, each lasting more than 40 minutes, such as: fast walking, jogging, cycling, etc., middle-aged and elderly people can participate in fitness exercises according to their own conditions.

9. Actively accept the treatments for related diseases like myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease, etc. The risk of stroke in people with the above diseases is significantly higher than that of ordinary people, thus they should have regular physical examination and reexamination, get treatments by specialists, and take medicines as prescribed by doctors.
