Four Common Diarrheal Viruses

15-01-2025

Diarrhea is a common and frequently-occurring disease in human beings, especially in children, the elderly and those with immune deficiency. It ranks second only to respiratory diseases in the cause of death among infants and young children. Within a variety of pathogens of diarrhea disease (bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.), the diarrhea virus 4 items -- rotavirus, intestinal adenovirus, norovirus, astrovirus are the common cause of infant diarrhea disease.

Rotavirus virions are round and spherical, divided into four serotypes, the main sub-types that  cause human diarrhea are type A and type AB, the main sub-type that cause  children's diarrhea rotavirus is type A. Rotavirus is one of the main pathogens that cause diarrhea in infants and young children. Rotavirus is prevalent in summer, autumn and winter every year. The infection route is fecal-oral route. The clinical manifestation is acute gastroenteritis and penetrative diarrheal disease.

Enteric adenovirus is divided into 7 species (A-G) and 52 serotypes (Ad1-Ad52), among which F species (Ad40, Ad41) are the main circulating strains causing adenovirus diarrhea. The youngest age of onset of adenovirus gastroenteritis is 1 month, and most cases occur in infants under 3 years of age. Ad-40 mainly affects infants around the age of 1, while Ad-41 affects older children and can occur throughout the year.

Noroviruses are single-plus-stranded RNA viruses, belonging to the Norovirus genus of the caliciviridae family. Noroviruses are divided into groups 1 and 2 (G1 and G2) according to their nucleocapsid coding genes. Norovirus-infected diarrhea is endemic worldwide and can occur throughout the year, mainly in adults and school-age children, with a high incidence in cold seasons.

Asteroviruses belong to a separate asteroviridae, asteroviridae, capsid free single-stranded positive stranded RNA viruses. Astrovirus is divided into 8 serotypes, and the prevalence of each serotype varies according to the region and the epidemic year. Most of them are serotype 1, which is one of the main pathogens causing infant diarrhea, and also the main pathogen of acute viral gastroenteritis in the elderly and those with immune deficiency. The susceptible population are the Infants under 5 years old, 5%-20% are recessive infections. Sporadic adult patients with acute gastroenteritis have also been reported.

In order to better diagnose the cause of diarrhea,  Wiz Biotech adopted the immunochromatography technology  and the double antibody sandwich method, the test kits were used to detect group A rotavirus, enteric adenovirus, norovirus etc in the stool of children with diarrhea. The kit adopts the patient's stool specimen, which can be checked at any time. The test is convenient, rapid and sensitive.
