The treponema pallidum antibody test is a blood test to detect antibodies to the bacteria Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis. This test is used when a screening test for syphilis is positive to confirm that there is a true infection.
The treponema pallidum antibody becomes reactive 4-6 weeks after infection. Unlike the nontreponemal tests, once the FTA-ABS test becomes reactive, it will remain reactive for many years.
Description
Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease caused by treponema pallidum, which is mainly spread through direct sexual contact. TP can be also passed to the next generation via the placenta, which leads to stillbirth, premature delivery, and infants with congenital syphilis. The incubation period of TP is 9-90 days with an average of 3 weeks. Morbidity normally occurs 2-4 weeks upon infection of syphilis. In normal infection, TP-IgM can be detected first, which disappears upon effective treatment. TP-IgG can be detected upon occurrence of IgM, which may exist for relatively long time. Detection of TP infection is still one of the bases of clinical diagnosis by now. Detection of TP antibody is of great significance to prevention of TP transmission and treatment of TP antibody.
