The T4 rapid test kit is an in vitro immunochromatographic assay for the quantitative detection of total thyroxine in serum/plasma samples. It is intended to aid in thyroid function evaluation. The result can be obtained in 15 minutes.
Introduction
Thyroxine, also known as T4, is one of the two main hormones secreted by the thyroid, and responsible for regulating metabolism (the other is triiodothyronine, i.e., T3). T4 and T3 are regulated by sensitive feedback system. The hypothalamus releases thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) to stimulate the pituitary to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which will cause the thyroid to release T3 and T4. Release of TRH and TSH is regulated through feedback control mechanism. Thyroxine (T4) is released into blood circulation in free form. Most of them (more than 99%) bind with proteins in plasma and are known as conjugated thyroxine. Trace amount of T4 doesn’t bind with proteins in plasma and is known as free thyroxine (FT4). Total thyroxine (TT4) refers to the sum of free and conjugated thyroxine in serum. Excessive secretion of thyroxine in the body is known as hyperthyroidism. Insufficient secretion is called as hypothyroidism. Clinically, TT4 is a reliable indicator for diagnosis and therapeutic effect observation of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
